Foods That Start With R

Quite frankly, there are several unique foods that start with r, and you might wonder what they might be. We will dig up some delicious dishes that you need for a memorable evening, from savory to the main courses. Let’s jump into it.

Radish is a root veggie that might not be a popular food that starts with an r one but definitely one of the healthiest ones. This veggie, full of crunchiness, can be eaten raw or cooked. They are even perfect for salads.

Radishes are packed with Vitamin C. Just about 1/2 cup can fulfill your daily allowance for Vitamin C. It also acts as an antioxidant that helps to prevent free radicals from damaging your cells and from various environmental toxins. Radishes also have antifungal properties. They can prevent oral yeast infections and even invasive candidiasis.

What are your thoughts on pineapple for pizza? Confused, huh? Well, raisins can also be a part of controversial topics. They are one of the most consumed dried r foods. These brownish or yellowish things are actually dried corpses of grapes. These versatile add-ons can be on your daily diet with ease. They are usually found in bakery cookies and fruit cakes. You can also include them in yogurt or even quick oatmeals. Don’t forget to use them as toppings for salads as well.

Despite their small size, raisins contain considerable amounts of sugar, high in calories as well. They are also packed with fiber, vitamins, and various minerals. Boron can be found in an ample amount in raisins. It mainly joins up with calcium to keep the bones and joints healthy. Moreover, boron plays a vital role in treating osteoporosis. Last but not least, some phytochemicals that are present in raisins work against the oral microbes in your mouth.

These sweet berries are considered super fruit, as not only are they packed with a juicy flavor but also full of various nutrients. These small berries have a short shelf-life; thus, they are usually harvested during fall. These little snack items are also a bit tart, but the tart flavor can be negligible for all the healthy notes. You can find raspberries in black, yellow, red, or even purple colored.

A short note, better consume these berries as soon as possible for the shelf life I’ve mentioned earlier. Raspberries can be consumed as direct snack items or even as toppings for various kinds of desserts.

Raspberries are relatively high in antioxidants. These compounds put up a barrier against cell damage. For even various chronic diseases, these antioxidants are here for you. These berries are also full of tannins that shield you against alpha-amylase. This enzyme usually works for breaking down starch. But for the protective shield, starch is broken down in less amount than usual. Tannins might also have an impact on the regulation of your blood sugar.

Ratatouille is one of the classic and popular French dishes that start with r. It is packed with fresh tomatoes, eggplant, zucchini, yellow squash, and bell pepper. Serve it simply, with toasted bread, with pasta; you name it. Why describe by myself when I can provide you with the recipe? Let’s get into this.

  • 2 eggplants
  • 6 tomatoes
  • 2 yellow squashes
  • 2 zucchinis
  • 2 tbsp of olive oil
  • 1 large onion, diced
  • 4 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1 red bell pepper, diced
  • 1 yellow bell pepper, diced
  • 28 oz of tomato puree
  • 2 tbsp of chopped fresh basil
  • salt to taste
  • freshly ground pepper

For Herb Seasoning:-

  • 2 tbsp of chopped fresh basil
  • 2 tbsp of chopped fresh parsley
  • 1 tsp of garlic, minced
  • 2 tsp of fresh thyme
  • 4 tablespoons olive oil
  • salt to taste
  • freshly ground pepper

Directions for preparing step by step:

Step 1: Start with the oven. Preheat it to 375F.

Step 2: Get the veggies. Wash them properly. Now, slice the eggplant, tomatoes, squash, and zucchini into 1 mm rounds; don’t have to be perfect, do your best. Set aside.

Step 3: Now, we are going to make a sauce. Get a saucepan—heat 2 tbsp of olive oil over medium-high settings. Now, add 1 diced large onion, 4 cloves of minced garlic, red and yellow bell peppers, and saute until soft. It will take about 10 minutes.

Step 4: Now, season with salt and pepper. After that, add the can of tomato puree and stir until the ingredients are thoroughly combined. Remove the pan from heat, and then add 2 tbsp of chopped basil. Stir it for the last time and then smooth the surface with a spatula.

Step 5: Let’s get to the veggies again—time to arrange those in the sauce. Let’s get creative here. Arrange the veggies in alternating patterns. Do remember, though, to place them from the outer edge to the middle of the pan. However, the presentation brings about a significant factor for this unique dish. Finish it by seasoning with salt and pepper.

Step 6: Now to the special herb seasoning. Get a small bowl. Add 2 tbsp of chopped basil, 2 tbsp of chopped parsley, 1 tsp of minced garlic, 2 tsp of fresh thyme, 4 tbsp of olive oil, salt, pepper, and give it a good mix.

Step 7: Now, spoon the seasoning over the veggies. We are done here.

Step 8: Cover the pan with aluminum foil and bake for around 40 minutes. After that, uncover, and then bake for another 20 minutes.

Serve hot and enjoy!

Red Cabbage

No other vegetable starts with r can be as diverse as red cabbage. Though they sometimes can be seen in purple, they are mostly used as raw in various salad items. You can also cook them, no worries here. Being a versatile veggie, you can even consume the fermented version, known as sauerkraut. Now, the taste here is pretty similar to the green cabbage.

This red variety of cabbage has more beneficial components compared to the other varieties. This red cabbage is known to reduce inflammation and can put up a barrier against certain types of cancer. Though they are low in calories, they are an excellent source of Vitamin A, C, K, and B complex. The contained antioxidants can help to protect against cellular damage. We can also get a rich source of anthocyanins from red cabbage that are known to reduce the risk of heart diseases.

Red Velvet

If you want to remember any luscious desserts that start with r, Red velvet is the one you should remember. Though this was originally a cake, now you can also enjoy it as a cupcake, or even as ice cream. It has a hint of chocos with some sharpness from the buttermilk as it is made of cocoa.

Rhubarb is actually a veggie, whereas most of my friends think that this one is a sour tasted fruit. These large stalks are used in sweeteners to balance out the flavor. In some regions of the world, it is sometimes even used as a medicine.

I have a gin recipe of rhubarb that you will enjoy. Use seasonal rhubarb to make this. You can also top the finished gin with soda water for a refreshing mood on a summertime evening.

  • 1 cup of pink rhubarb stalk
  • 3 tbsp of caster sugar
  • 1/2 cup of gin

Directions for preparing step by step:

Step 1: Start with the rhubarbs. Cut the stalks and put them in a jar with 3 tbsp of caster sugar. Shake well and leave overnight. The juice will come out eventually. Let’s come back after 24 hours.

Step 2: Now, add 1/2 cup of gin. Seal and shake well. Better leave for about 4 weeks before having a drink. The color will be paler overtime.

Step 3: Strain off the liquor before serving. Enjoy!

Ricotta Cheese

Ricotta is basically one of the fluffiest cheeses that start with r. They are made from goat, sheep, or especially from Italian water buffalo milk. There is an unusual catch here. This cheese is not made directly from milk; instead, it is made from the repurposed or the leftover liquid from making other kinds of cheeses, as the name defines, ‘Recooked.’ Ricotta cheese has a creamy texture, somewhat similar to cottage cheese, though comparatively lighter.

As ricotta cheese has age varieties, means it can be preserved for much longer. You can taste its deliciousness with salads, eggs, or even pasta. Hoping for creamy dips? Ricotta is here for you.

Ricotta cheese contains whey protein. This protein is basically made of all the essential amino acids that are vitally needed for the human body on a regular basis. Moreover, whey can be easily absorbed by the body and can promote the growth of our muscles. It can also aid in regulating our blood pressure and cholesterol levels.

You might be familiar with the shape but not the name itself. Rigatoni can be called a close relative of penne pasta. Both seem short and tube-shaped as well. The only difference is the rigatoni is more extensive, slightly curved, noted. Now, this food with r works usually with baked dishes; thick sauces are preferred. Rigatoni is quite sturdy to hold its shape.

Rigatoni contains quite some amount of gluten. It is a type of protein found mainly in wheat products. People diagnosed with celiac disease can be triggered by their immune response that is caused by gluten; they are gluten-intolerant. Even their small intestine might get damaged. Better to consult your doctor if you have any digestive issues and a lover of pasta.

Rum, a drink that starts with r, is quite a popular item since the middle ages, or might even more past. From Captain Jacksparrow to the liquor store, the base mixture always contains fermented and distilled sugarcane juice. You can guess already that the Caribbean is the largest producer of rum. This vintage drink is produced in various grades. The dark ones are usually for cooking, whereas the premium ones are for consumption. As a matter of fact, rum is widely used in the production of various types of liquors and syrups.

Here you go, folks. Now you have an impressive list of foods that start with r. Some of them are known, obviously. Some of them had to be researched. Now do me a favor, and start digging up and craving them already.
